North United Communities (NUC) has been making a significant impact on the lives of children and young people in the north of Glasgow for over 30 years. The organisation focuses on building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging through a variety of outreach efforts, including street work, drop-in activities, sports, and the arts. Their programmes offer a creative and engaging way for individuals to connect, learn new skills, and express themselves. The Merchants House recently provided a grant of £2,500 towards these activities, and the impact of this funding can be seen in testimonials from participants. 

Tyler, 12, shared how his involvement in NUC’s activities helped him overcome a personal fear: “I was worried about coming to the group to start off with because it was a new environment, but I was made to feel welcome and I tried something new; I went rowing on the canal and overcame my fear of being in the water.” This experience not only allowed Tyler to confront his fears but also helped him develop new skills, highlighting the positive impact NUC’s programmes have on young people’s personal growth.

Mohammed, 14, expressed how “The club is a lifesaver for us in the community because I can be myself and not worry about anything in these two hours in the club, and I can trust the staff. If I have any issues, then I can speak to them.” This sense of trust and safety that NUC fosters is invaluable in helping young people feel supported and understood, allowing them to open up and thrive.

Finally, Colin, 10, described his sense of achievement after overcoming a physical challenge: “I was scared of going up on the climbing wall, but my peers encouraged me, and I achieved climbing the wall. Everyone was cheering my name, and I love being part of this group.” Stories like Colin’s demonstrate the power of peer encouragement and how NUC’s programmes inspire self-confidence and teamwork.
