A city of energy, driven by purpose: by Lord Dean of Guild Tony McElroy

As Lord Dean of Guild of the Merchants House of Glasgow, I have the privilege of witnessing the many faces of this remarkable city- from its world class events to its quiet acts of generosity, from its entrepreneurial spirit to its enduring sense of community.

Glasgow is a city with unmistakable energy. It pulses through our culture, our creativity, and it’s a constant talking point when meeting visitors to the city and long term residents alike. The energy is in the welcoming warmth of our people, the boldness of our ideas, and the resilience that defines us. This energy is something to be celebrated- it gives Glasgow its character, its charm, and yes, sometimes even a little gallus.

But so what? Energy alone does not define a city. What’s the point of having energy if you do nothing with it. What gives Glasgow its edge, is its purpose- and this is where business in the city meets community.

Our charitable organisations work tirelessly to uplift those in need. Our businesses- large and small- drive innovation, create opportunity, and invest in the future. And our communities, ensure that no one is left behind. These three pillars do not stand apart- they support one another, and together they shape the soul of our city.

Business people, whether in Glasgow, from Glasgow or just sharing a passion for Glasgow, time and again recognise this and want to give something back. The Merchants House provides that unique platform for those wanting to make an impact in communities in Glasgow today and in years to come. With funds generously donated by those sharing our passion for helping those who call Glasgow home, we keep the virtuous circle turning- those with a stake in our economy giving something back now and in the future. That’s what makes Glasgow. A city that is not only alive with possibility, but also deeply committed to progress with heart.

If you’d like to learn more about the work of the Merchants House, or you’d like to make a donation or legacy that will benefit communities and charities across the city, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.
