Walking Tour: Walking in the Footsteps of the History of Glasgow and Those Who Made It – The Glasgow Necropolis

Annette Mullen, Chairperson of The Friends of the Glasgow Necropolis, leads us on a walking tour of this Victorian cemetery.
The Glasgow Necropolis was founded by the Merchants House and opened in April 1833. It was planned as a sanitised and respectable garden cemetery, in contrast to others at the time, which were overcrowded and unhygienic.
Fifty thousand individuals have been buried here, and there are approximately 3,500 monuments, designed by major architects and sculptors of the time, including Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, Charles Rennie Macintosh and JT Rochead, in every architectural style.
The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis are a charity founded in 2005 to raise awareness and enjoyment of the Necropolis, and they work with Glasgow City Council to conserve and develop it, for the benefit and amenity of the public.
