On Friday 24th July 2026 the Lord Dean of Guild, Tony McElroy, was honoured to sign the Deed of Covenant with the Armed Forces. Reflecting on the significance of the signing, Tony writes:

I am delighted that the Merchants House of Glasgow has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, reaffirming our commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans, reservists and military families.

Glasgow has long been a city with deep and enduring connections to the Armed Forces. For generations, Glaswegians have answered the call to serve their country, often making extraordinary sacrifices in defence of the freedoms and values we enjoy today. Their contribution, and that of their families who support them, deserves our lasting gratitude and respect.

The Merchants House has always sought to play its part in supporting those who strengthen our society. Of course, this means supporting charities and community groups, but Glasgow is a rich tapestry and we are proud to play our part in demonstrating solidarity with those who help Glasgow flourish. By signing the Covenant, we pledge to ensure that members of the Armed Forces community are treated with respect. It is a practical expression of our values and our belief in service, responsibility and community.

As Lord Dean of Guild, I am particularly proud that the Merchants House is joining organisations across Scotland and the United Kingdom in demonstrating this commitment. Our commitment is enduring and I look forward to continuing to strengthen our Armed Forces links.
