Finding Your Feet

Merchants House supports Finding Your Feet with a £2,500 grant towards their social inclusion programme, including their popular ‘ampu-tea’ meet-ups for a cuppa and a chat!

Finding Your Feet (FYF) is Scotland’s leading amputee charity, and supports families affected by amputation or limb absence through a range of projects designed to positively affect both physical and mental wellbeing. The organisation has a positive and encouraging outlook, promoting achievements and success, and encouraging participation in a wide range of activities. Merchants House funding will go towards their social inclusion programme, which includes fitness classes, a book club, a gardening club, arts and crafts sessions, excursions and their popular ampu-teas.

Isolation is a huge problem for many amputees. It has been proven that quality of life and even life expectancy is greatly reduced without social inclusion, with as many as 30% of vascular amputees not surviving to one-year post amputation. FYF is key to addressing this issue, and they are directly saving lives.

Finding Your Feet was set up by the inspirational Cor Hutton, who recognised the need for peer support after she lost her hands and legs below the knees due to sepsis. She started a small group, which has now grown to a network of over 1200, with clubs across Scotland. Cor leads by example – she has completed the London Triathlon and was the first female quadruple amputee to climb Ben Nevis and Mount Kilimanjaro- what incredible achievements!
