HOPE Connections: A community-based support programme
A £7,300 grant to support social inclusion and ultimately transform lives
Set up in 2018 to combat social isolation and its detrimental effects, HOPE Connections has developed a community-based support programme designed to foster social inclusion for individuals struggling with addictions, mental health issues, involvement in the criminal justice system, and homelessness. Their programme aims to provide both immediate relief and long-term support, ultimately transforming the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
The 12 week programme is designed to address both practical and emotional needs. Participants explore the impact of trauma and the pathways to recovery, with information about finances and mental health provided, and guidance about how to access more resources and support. Walk and Talk groups encourage physical activity and mental wellness, and drama and there are also art therapy sessions to support trauma recovery through creative expression. Various group activities and outings are organised to reduce isolation, including outdoor, cultural, and entertainment events.
A £7,300 grant from the Merchants House will be used to cover some of the costs involved in the programme, including venue hire, refreshments and practical support in the form of vouchers for food, fuel and mobile phone top-ups. All activities are facilitated by individuals with lived experiences of the issues the beneficiaries face, ensuring empathy and understanding in the delivery of support.
The programme aims to make a tangible difference in the lives of approximately 50 individuals over the course of one year. Anticipated outcomes include enhanced access to benefits and emotional support, reduced isolation and improved health. Longer term, it is hoped the programme will lead to a reduction in reoffending rates for former prisoners, sustained recovery from substance abuse and prevention of homelessness through tenancy retention.
