The Lord Dean: A round up of recent activities
The Lord Dean, Andrew McFarlane, continues to attend a wide range of events across the city. In recent months this has spanned everything from visiting the Citizens Theatre ahead of its reopening later this year to ringing in the Year of the Snake at a Chinese Burns Supper!

Civic responsibility
As second citizen, the Lord Dean not only represents the Merchants House but also steps in for the Lord Provost when needed. His engagements have included a range of civic receptions and annual events, such as the Council’s Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch and the Lord Provost’s Children’s Christmas Party, where snacks, selection boxes, and even a special visit from Santa delighted attendees!
The Lord Dean also recently attended the launch of Glasgow850, a year long programme of events organised by Glasgow City Council to celebrate Glasgow’s 850th birthday in 2025. The Merchants House will be participating as part of the Port Stones project, alongside the council and the Trades House. The project will see stones set into footpaths to mark the location of the four historic ‘Ports’ or gateways into the city, leaving a lasting legacy of our past for future generations.
Honouring our Armed Forces
The Lord Dean once again represented the Merchants House at this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at George Square, held at the Cenotaph on 10 November 2024. Hundreds attended the event, with veterans and military personnel joined by politicians, dignitaries and members of the public at the poignant ceremony to remember those who have fought and died in conflict. Deputy first minister Kate Forbes and Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren were amongst those who lay poppy wreaths. As an organisation with a deep connection to the Armed Forces, these occasions serve as vital opportunities to express our gratitude and support for their dedication.

Members events
Member events continue to be well-received. In December, we enjoyed the annual Christmas Concert, which featured performances from students of St Denis’ Primary School in Dennistoun.
More recently, members were treated to an exclusive performance of Enlightenment: An Immersive Light Show. This 30-minute, audio-visual spectacle, set to the enchanting music of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, brought the changing seasons to life through breathtaking 360-degree projections.

The Lord Dean would like to express his gratitude to the Directors, staff, and members of the Merchants House for their ongoing support of both him and the organisation, it is deeply appreciated
