Celebrating Ireland and Scotland’s Connections: A Presidential Visit to the Merchants House
The Merchants House was honoured to welcome Her Excellency Catherine Connolly, President of Ireland, on Friday 18 September 2026, as part of her first official visit to Scotland. Lord Dean of Guild, Tony McElroy, and Vice Dean of Guild, Frances McMenamin, were delighted to host the President at the Merchants House and both attended the event.
The community reception, hosted by the Consul General of Ireland in Edinburgh, Mr Jerry O’Donovan, brought together members of Glasgow’s Irish diaspora alongside representatives of Irish community groups from Edinburgh and the wider Central Belt.
President Connolly spoke warmly about the deep and enduring connections between Ireland and Scotland, paying tribute to the contribution of Irish immigrants to Scottish society and the work that continues to strengthen ties between the two nations.
Guests were introduced individually by Mr O’Donovan, with the President taking time to speak to each person about their work and involvement in their communities. Music filled the room, creating a warm and informal atmosphere for an occasion centred on conversation and connection.
Speaking after the event, the Lord Dean said “It was a great honour to welcome President Connolly to the Merchants House. We were delighted to be part of such a warm and memorable occasion, celebrating the enduring friendships between Ireland, Glasgow and the wider Scottish community.”
