The Merchants House of Glasgow is delighted to support Sunny Govan Community Radio with a grant of £3,800 towards its SQA Radio and Podcasting Skills programme.

Based in Govan, Sunny Govan Community Radio delivers free six-week courses for people interested in broadcasting, podcasting and community media. Open to anyone, the programme equips participants with practical skills while providing an opportunity to gain an SQA qualification in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Throughout the course, participants learn how to write scripts, produce and present their own radio shows, conduct interviews, compile playlists, and use professional broadcasting and audio editing equipment. By creating programmes based on their own interests, experiences and personalities, participants gain far more than technical skills- they develop confidence, find their voice and build lasting connections within their community.

Sunny Govan has built strong relationships with local residents and partner organisations, making it particularly well placed to engage people who may not otherwise access training or support services. Around 15% of course participants go on to volunteer with the station, while many others use the experience as a stepping stone towards further education, employment or improved wellbeing.

This project gives young people and adults in Govan the chance to develop real industry skills in broadcasting, podcasting, storytelling and media production.

The £3,800 award will allow us to provide accredited training, access to studio time, and hands-on mentoring from experienced trainers. This support is making it possible for local people, many of whom face significant barriers, to gain confidence, qualifications and pathways into education and employment. We are hugely grateful for this investment in our community and look forward to sharing the impact of the project over the coming year.”
