Opening Up New Horizons with Renfrew Town Sea Scouts

The Merchants House has awarded £10,000 to Renfrew Town Sea Scout Group to support its programme of water activities, leadership training and outdoor opportunities for young people aged 12 to 25.

For many of the young people involved, particularly those from less advantaged backgrounds, activities such as sailing can feel out of reach. Often seen as an elitist sport, sailing can carry the perception that it is “not for people like me”. Renfrew Town Sea Scouts works hard to break down those barriers by providing fully equipped activities at very low cost, ensuring every young person can take part regardless of their circumstances.

Through weekly training at Castle Semple Loch, young leaders aged 18 to 25 help Scouts and Explorers aged 10 to 16 learn a range of watersports from May to September. Participants are able to complete recognised governing body courses and gain experience in sailing and other water activities in a safe, supportive environment. Alongside practical skills, the project builds confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership — skills that stay with young people long after they leave the water.

The impact of the group’s work can be seen in the achievements of its members. Young people have gone on to become champions at Scottish Scout regattas, receive awards from the Queen for bravery and achievement, earn the prestigious Queen’s Scout Award and represent Scotland at international jamborees. Above all, the organisation helps young people navigate life with confidence and ambition, supported by the skills and encouragement they have gained through Scouting.

The grant from The Merchants House will help the group prepare for the coming year and beyond. Funding will support essential repairs and maintenance to boats, sails, the minibus and the Scout hall, ensuring activities can continue safely. It will also enable young leaders to undertake further training and qualifications, strengthening the group’s ability to provide high-quality activities in-house. In addition, the grant will contribute towards vital governance and safety costs, including insurance and on-board safety equipment.

Renfrew Town Sea Scout Group has been providing opportunities for young people in Renfrew and the surrounding area since 1919. Today, the group supports children and young people from the age of four through to eighteen, with a Squirrel Drey, Beaver Colony, Cub Pack, Scout Troop and Explorer Unit. Its water-based programme keeps the heritage of the Clyde alive for each new generation, while giving young people the chance to discover what they are capable of.
