Merchants House representatives were recently invited for a tour of the James McCune Smith Learning Hub.

The building is part of the campus development at the University of Glasgow. The learning hub opened in April 2021 and provides a state-of-the-art learning and teaching facility with a capacity for more than 2,500 students.  The 90.6 million pound building, located on University Avenue in Glasgow’s west end, includes a lecture theatre for up to 500 students, interactive teaching spaces, plus seminar and group study spaces.

Dr James McCune Smith was born into slavery but went on to attend Glasgow University and became the first African American to be awarded a medical degree and the Learning Hub honours his great legacy.

The Merchants House and the University of Glasgow have a long affiliation. The House sponsors an annual lecture which will now take place in this fantastic new learning facility.  Thank you to Fiona and Margaux from the Strategic Philanthropy Team for showing us around this stunning building.
